The 13th edition of the Battle of the Blues NZ lived up to its reputation, delivering an unforgettable day of cricket, camaraderie and celebration. Hosted by the Old Royalist Association of New Zealand, this year's encounter raised the bar once again, drawing a record crowd to the Cornwall Cricket Club and creating a vibrant carnival atmosphere that reflected the rich traditions shared by both OBAs.
The stakes were high heading into the contest. The Royalists were determined to retain the shield they had held for the past two years, while the Thomians arrived with a single objective of reclaiming the coveted shield.
Winning the toss, the Thomians, without hesitation, elected to bat first on a favourable pitch that offered ideal batting conditions in the first innings, laying a solid foundation for victory with a formidable total of 177 for 9 in their allotted 30 overs.
The Thomian innings was built on valuable contributions from Asiri Wickramanayake, Dilshan Seniviratne and Ruwantha Fernando, whose composed batting and crucial partnerships ensured a competitive total as the wicket gradually became less conducive to batting during the latter stages of the innings. For the Royalists, Gayan Dissanayake produced a standout bowling performance, claiming two crucial wickets at key stages of the innings, while Dinel Dayasagara produced a masterclass fielding display.
In reply, the Old Royalists faced an uphill battle from the outset, losing their opening wicket in just the second over. Despite a determined effort from Dinel Dayasagara, who anchored the innings with a resilient knock and a late flourish from Dulan, the Royalists struggled to build meaningful partnerships on a pitch that favoured the bowlers in the second innings. The Thomian bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings, striking at regular intervals and capitalising on key moments to prevent the Royalists from gaining any momentum.
The disciplined bowling performance ultimately paid dividends as the Royalists were bowled out for 124 in the 28th over, handing the Thomians a convincing 53 run victory and seeing the shield return to the STC OBA NZ after a two year absence.
Beyond the outcome, the 13th Battle of the Blues NZ was a true celebration of sportsmanship and brotherhood. Both teams competed fiercely while upholding the highest standards of respect and camaraderie, reminding everyone that the spirit of the game extends far beyond the final result.
This year’s event also set a new benchmark for organisation, with meticulous planning and execution ensuring a record turnout enjoyed an authentic Lankan big match experience.
The festive atmosphere was brought to life by a first of its kind live Papare performance, delicious Lankan cuisine, entertainment for all ages and the cherished traditions that have made this annual encounter a highlight of the Sri Lankan community calendar.
